Elevated Conversations: Ayahuasca: Five Years Later—Is the Transformative Power Real?

Five years ago, Pete and Roxy, the hosts of the Elevated Conversations Podcast, made a decision that would unravel their entire lives—in the best possible way. Once successful Insurance Brokers running their own business, they took their first cup of Ayahuasca, the sacred plant medicine known as "Mother Iowasca."

In this candid reflection, the couple discusses the enduring question: Is the profound inner turmoil of a plant medicine journey truly worth the effort? They share how their life has shifted from the stress and control of corporate life to a foundation of surrender, happiness, and radical presence.

The Illusion of Control and the Dark Night of the Soul

One of the most powerful lessons Pete and Roxy learned from Ayahuasca Transformation was the necessity of surrender. They realized that the need to control everything in their day-to-day lives was the biggest source of their stress and anxiety. For many, the fear of being "out of control" is the main barrier to sitting with the medicine.

For Roxy, her first journey was a "Dark Night of the Soul." The medicine stripped away her ego and showed her the deep-seated fear and trauma she carried, tracing it all the way back to her childhood and even the environment of her mother's womb. Though traumatic and intensely scary, this breakdown was the crucial shake-up her system needed.

The Five-Year Transformation: Zero Anxiety and Inner Happiness

The dramatic difference five years later serves as powerful evidence of the medicine's lasting effect.

  • For Roxy: She now experiences zero anxiety or worry. The blueprint of worry that was conditioned into her subconscious has been "emptied out," leaving her feeling embodied, grounded, and living from her heart rather than her overthinking mind.

  • For Pete: He notes a significant drop in his "underlying volcanic movement"—his proneness to emotional outbursts and getting triggered. He was able to heal deep-seated shame, guilt, and the constant need to please others, leading to a much stronger and more present relationship with his family.

They emphasize a crucial realization: they stopped looking for happiness and fulfillment outside themselves. They learned that true happiness is an internal state that is always available, and their job is simply to allow themselves to move into a place of happiness without guilt.

The Practice of Integration and Presence

The hosts stress that Ayahuasca is not a "once-and-for-all fix." The real work lies in integration—living the lessons learned during the ceremony over the following months and years.

This integration manifests in their daily lives as a profound sense of gratitude and presence. Roxy shares how she focuses on being present even while folding laundry, recognizing that these small moments with her children are precious and temporary. They learned that the "now moment" is all we truly have, and by being present, they conserve the energy that was once drained by overthinking and worry.

As they continue their healing journey at Rythmia Life Advancement Center (where they have done over 18 journeys each), the medicine now provides different, more consultant-like guidance, proving the work is ongoing and evolutionary.

For Pete and Roxy, the temporary discomfort and "churning" of the Ayahuasca experience were unequivocally worth the effort. The exchange was simple: they surrendered their lifelong stress and anxiety in return for profound clarity, lasting happiness, and an authentic connection to their true selves.

Their final advice is a call to honesty: if you feel the pull toward spiritual growth or healing, remember that you cannot carry outdated beliefs, unhealed wounds, or expired patterns into a higher vibration. Healing is not about fixing yourself; it’s about shedding everything that isn't truly you.

If you're feeling called to explore the depths of your own consciousness, their story is a powerful reminder that on the other side of that initial storm is the greatest peace you can imagine.
